Description
The properties to be demolished to make way for the building of the Guildhall extension were 1 and 2 High Street (also known as Boatstall Lane), The White Lion Hotel and White Lion Tap (which later became the Bridge Street Vaults), the Abbey Hotel sited at 4 Orange Grove, the Cross Keys pub at 7 Orange Grove, and properties at 3, 4 and 6 Orange Grove. The collection includes the legal notices and documentation from the City Surveyor, Charles Fortune, and the Bath Justices of Peace, relating to the proposed stopping up of Boatstall Lane. There are a number of papers relating to compensation for those whose leases were revoked as well as notices to quit and conveyancing documents for the sale of the Abbey Hotel, 1 and 2 High Street, and The Bridge Street Brewery. Several papers relate to the protracted negotiations between Frederick Morris and the Corporation. Morris had inherited the freehold of the White Lion Tap from his father but with a convenant preventing him from gaining directly from the sale of the property. Also included is the auction details, with a plan, for 1 and 2 High Street and 3 Orange Grove, which had come up for auction in 1889.
