Bath City Council. 'Registers of Licences', including licences for guns, game, dogs, carriages, motor cars, hackney carriages and male servants
Date
1908-1916
Extent
Extent: 20 vols
Description
These registers include all the classes of licences for which the Council had responsibility. The classes are: 1 Gun licences 2 Game licences (the right to kill game) 3 Armorial bearings, dogs, carriage (horse or mule), hackney carriage (horse or motor), male servants 3a Licences for motor cars, not being hackney carriages (from 1909) 4 and 5 Hackney carriage licences and carriage plates 6 Game dealers
Class 3 is arranged alphabetically by address; as there are a very large number of entries for this class, the number of pages in the volume was not large enough to include them all. A second (and in some cases a third) volume was therefore used to list the remainder of the class 3 entries. Confusingly, these 'overflow' volumes are titled 'Register of Licences. Establishment'.
Note that for motor cars the registers record only the registration number, owner, address and weight or horsepower of the car; no details of make or model are recorded.
