Side A of the seventh audio cassette in a collection of eight which records Ron A. W. Perry’s memoirs entitled ‘The Way It Was’.
Side A is 00:46:08 long and has static noise interference throughout the recording, with Ron’s voice very faint at times. Ron’s voice breaks in at 00:00:05 and cuts out mid-sentence at 00:46:03 leaving the rest of the tape blank.
The themes explored on Side A include: the 34th Armoured Brigade’s movements into Holland on the 12th March, the Rhine on the 3rd April and then in to Germany, near Munster, in order to take over from the American soldiers [00:00:25]; the announcement of VE Day and how it felt to know the war was over [00:01:47]; being stationed in Ochtrup, near Munster, with a description of the night guard procedure [00:03:10]; description of a house which an officer occupied in Ochtrup and turned into a hotel for the soldiers [00:07:08]; a detailed account of how they managed to organise a 21 gun victory salute [00:12:00]; the time spent in Fallersleben near Wolfsburg [00:24:55]; being stationed at Wendisch Evern with a description of the school in the village and the beavers kept in the local swimming pool, bred for their skins [00:35:44]; and a detailed description of being placed on rope patrol [00:40:00].
