Side A of the sixth audio cassette in a collection of eight which records Ron A. W. Perry’s memoirs entitled ‘The Way It Was’.

Side A is 00:46:26 long and has loud static noise interference throughout the recording. Ron has noted on the cassette case that this is due to a machine defect. Ron’s voice breaks in at 00:00:01. Ron’s voice cuts out mid-sentence at 00:46:07 and the rest of the tape is blank.

The themes explored on Side A include: a detailed description of fixing a tanks hydraulic leak and the importance of mending it so the driver didn’t lose his tank and, therefore, his luck [00:02:53]; recollection of watching an air raid over Caen, Normandy [00:10:20]; his regiment suffering casualties at Eversley when their tank has a direct hit [00:14:16]; his regiment seeing action in August 1944 at the River Odon and the River Seine [00:18:51]; experience of staying overnight at a French Farmers cottage whilst out repairing a recovery tank [00:20:15]; few days employed on airdrome defence duties at Eindhoven [00:28:20]; Christmas and Boxing Day 1944 [00:33:30]; and being stationed at Dinard, Normundy, and doing Nightwatch duty in the freezing cold conditions [00:41:03].
