Description: Side A of the fifth audio cassette of a collection of eight which records Ron A. W. Perry’s memoirs entitled ‘The Way It Was’.

Side A is 00:46:17 long and has loud static noise interference throughout the recording. Ron has noted on the cassette case that this is due to a machine defect. Ron’s voice breaks in, mid-sentence, at 00:00:06. Ron’s voice cuts out mid-sentence at 00:46:04 and the rest of the tape is blank.

The themes explored on Side A include: detailed talk of the modification works made to the tanks and how they failed [00:04:50]; his experience of attending a firing course on Exmoor [00:05:55]; explanation of the Signals Regiment and their work [00:20:19]; going on leave and his experience of travelling through London to Bath during a bombing raid [00:27:11]; and attending two courses, a tank waterproofing course in Troon, Scotland [00:31:15] and a shooting exercise on the South Downs [00:42:32].
