Side B of the third audio cassette in a collection of eight which records Ron A. W. Perry’s memoirs entitled ‘The Way It Was’.
Side B is 00:47:07 long and has loud static noise interference throughout the recording. Ron has noted on the cassette case that this is due to a machine defect. Ron’s voice breaks in, mid-sentence at 00:00:01. Ron’s voice cuts out, mid-sentence at 00:43:53 and the rest of the tape is blank.
The themes explored on Side B include: a mention of when Hull was blitzed [00:04:44]; posting to Beaminster as part of the Light Aid Detachment, including a detailed description of the men who served with him [00:05:26]; time spent in Hungerford and one detailed description of a kit search resulting in his friend being given 10 days ‘jankers’ cleaning pots and pans in the cookhouse [00:20:17]; recollection of a time, when stationed in Chippenham, Wiltshire, he was asked to visit Fullers in Bath to get spare parts and he was stopped by Red Caps near Bailbrook House, Bath, which resulted in him being brought up on a charge [00:14:05]; being billeted in Ogborne St George, Wiltshire, attached to the Hampshire Regiment, 10th Battalion [00:22:30]; descriptions of the Crossley truck and a Morris Commercial [00:26:48]; and a story of when a tank rolled down a hill and got embedded in a house [00:37:48].
