Custodial History
The Twerton Co-operative Society was founded in 1888 to benifit the Twerton area and the Society's members; shortly after in 1894 the Bath Co-operative Society was set up with the same idea for the town of Bath itself. In 1922 the Bath Co-operative and Twerton Co-operative societies amalgamated to form one society covering the whole of the Bath area called the Bath & Twerton Co-operative Society. In 1931 it was decided to rename the society to just 'The Bath Co-operative Society' to reflect its coverage of the whole Bath area. In 1967 the Bath Co-operative Society merged with other societies including the Trowbridge, Calne, Bradford-on-Avon, Chippenham, and Frome Co-operative Societies to form the Bath & West Regional Cooperative Society, with the previous Societies acting as Districts within the Region. The management of the regional society was made up of representatives from all the districts but was based in the offices of the former Bath Society.
