The Princess Alice was a popular paddle steamer that worked on the Thames. On 3 September 1878 the Princess Alice sunk after a collision with a steam collier, the 'Bywell Castle', and over 640 people drowned.

The subscription book records only five subscriptions, including one labelled as 'In memory of a [beloved] husband."
