Description
Widcombe Bridge was a wooden pedestrian bridge over the River Avon which collapsed on 6 June 1877 under the weight of a crowd of tourists who rushed onto the bridge after getting off of a train. The tragedy happened during the celebration of the centenary of the Bath and West of England Agricultural Society. The subscription book shows that £100 was given to the Bath United Hospital from the Council of the Bath and West of England Society; £5 each was then given by five other subscribers, including the Mayor of Bath and the Town Clerk.
