Description
1 Walter, son of Serlo
2 Juliana, daughter of William Springod
From 1 to 2
One stall to the south of the stalls of Bath which I bought of Robert Puther for 4 marks and 1/2 a mark of silver. To hold and to have to himself and to whomsoever he shall wish to give or assign it. Rendering for it yearly to the lords of the soil at the Feast of St. Michael 7d, and at Hock Day 5d for land gabel (land tax), for all service, exaction and demand. And that this my gift may have the strength of perpetual security, this present charter I have confirmed with the impression of my seal.
Witnesses: Caskill de Weston; John de Porta at that time Mayor of Bath; Andrew the clerk; Geoffrey Wissi; Hugh de Ayston; Thomas Sweyn; Walter Cabbel, and many others
(An old translation says it contains, perhaps, the very earliest mention of a Mayor of Bath. The device of the seal has much of the appearance of an ancient gem.)
Language: Latin
