Description
Under the Motor Car Act of 1903, Bath City Council was responsible for issuing licences to those who wished to drive motor cars or motor cycles. The licences cost five shillings, and had to be renewed each year, but there was no 'driving test' - the test of competency to drive was not introduced until 1934. Responsibility for issuing driving licences passed from local authorities to the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency in the early 1970s. No records of driving licences appear to have survived for the periods 1904-1921, 1930-1948, and 1950-73.
