Description
The collection includes records of some of the schools and colleges within Bath and North East Somerset, many of which no longer exist. The records that have survived are inconsistent, with many gaps. For many existing schools, the records have been retained by the schools themselves and some records are held at Somerset Archives, paricuarly for schools outside the City of Bath or former National/Parochial Schools. The schools and colleges included in the collection range from primary to higher education with some private schools.
The collection does not include records of Sunday Schools. Where these records have survived, they have been deposited as part of the relevant church or chapel's records eg. Argyle Street Chapel, Walcot Methodist Chapel, Octagon Chapel etc.
Access Conditions
Many of the records are restricted under the Data Protection Act where they contain personal information.
System of Arrangement
The collection is arranged according to individual schools. Some fonds include records of more than one school if mergers occurred.
Related Units of Description
There are many histories that have been written (and mostly published) of various schools in Bath and North East Somerset. These are held either in the PP (Pamphlets and Printed Works) collection or the main Local Studies collections. In addition there are various series of school magazines and prospectuses within the Local Studies Periodicals series.
