Description
Material relating to the tile mural 'The Virtuous Woman' installed in the corridor joining the Royal School (later the Royal High School) to the Freer Building in 1931. The mural was the work of artist and tile designer and manufacturer Sylvia Packard who was also an art teacher at the Royal School for a number of years. Comprises the following:

1. Illustrations of the tile mural (black and white photocopies).

2. 'Tile mural at The Royal School, Bath' by Tony Herbert (short unpublished article describing the mural and its present state of preservation).

3. 'Sylvia Packard' by Susan Rasey (a short unpublished history of the artist's life and her involvement in the ceramic tile business).

4. 'Ceramic Tile Mural. The Royal School, Bath' by Tony Herbert (a short unpublished article and report covering the history and significance of the tiles and their artist and the current conservation position and possible solutions). Also includes a photocopy of a handwritten covering letter to Mrs McKendrick (to whom a copy of the report was sent) from Tony Herbert, Conservation Secretary of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society.

5. 'Picture-Tiles in the 20th century' by Chris Blanchett. Photocopied pages from 'Fired Earth-1000 Years of Tiles in Europe' a catalogue of an exhibition to mark the tenth anniversary of the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society edited by Hans van Lemmen and John Malam (Richard Dennis Publications, 1991), pp. 60-62, which gives a short history of Carter, Stabler & Adams, the pottery producing company based in Poole, Dorset originally used by Sylvia Packard and Rosalind Ord for firing their ceramic tiles.
