Contains the following papers: 1) Gainsborough and 'the lodging-house way' by Susan Legioux Sloman (Illustrated. Relates to the house in Abbey Street which stood on the site where the 1897 extension to the Pump Room now stands. It was rented by the artist Thomas Gainsborough before he took up residence at 17 The Circus and his sister, Mary Gibbon, ran a Milliner's business from there for a while. Mentions the Duke of Kingston's Crest which was on the pediment of the house and which still survives in the Roman Baths Museum. Also gives a short account of the later history of the house at one time occupied by the National Provincial Bank and on the various lodging-houses kept by members of the Gainsborough family.
