Covers William Smith's work in Somerset including his role as Surveyor and Engineer to the Somerset Coal Canal Company and his design of the caisson lock at Combe Hay near Bath (photograph of surviving caisson tunnel at Combe Hay, p. 19). Also describes his work on the Kennet and Avon Canal from 1812 onwards dealing with leaks and landslides and his work on the Hot Springs of Bath and the Rivers Waterworks within the city.
