Description
A history of William 'Strata' Smith's unsuccessful venture into stone quarrying at Tucking Mill. in the early 1800s. Describes Smith's Kingham Field quarry in Combe Down, the stone works at Tucking Mill and the railway which ran between them. It shows photocopies of pages from his diary, sketches and photographs of Tucking Mill and of the remains of Smith's railway and quarry and contains a brief report of a recent excavation at the quarry entrance. It also contains a separate letter inside the cover from Richard Irving, President of Combe Down History Society to Colin Johnston, Principal Archivist at Bath Record Office.
