A biography of nineteenth-century artist and teacher Fanny (Frances Matilda) McIan nee Whitaker, daughter of prominent Bath cabinet makers and upholsterers Sarah and William Whitaker, and her husband Scottish actor and stage painter Robert Ronald McIan who later became well-known as an artist of Highlanders and Highland scenes. It details Fanny's early life in Bath and later life as a female artist and early teacher of art to women at the Female School of Design at Somerset House, London. Chapter 2 also gives an insight into the experiences of audiences and actors at the Theatre Royal, Bath in the early nineteenth century.
