Description
Copy of a lecture given to an audience at the Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution in aid of the Bath United Hospital and originally printed in the Bath Expresson May 29th 1858. The Batheaston Vase was originally dug up at Frascati in 1769, brought back to England by Sir John and Lady Miller and placed in a window of their home at Batheaston Villa. It was used for depositing the poetical compositions written by those who attended the fortnightly literary meetings held by the Millers; these were then pulled out and read alound to those present to determine a winner. The article focuses on Lady Miller and the entertainments held at the Millers rather than the Vase itself.
