Description
Unpublished research on the 'cabmen's rest', a sturdy wooden shelter painted olive-green that stood near the fountain in Pulteney Street. It stood on a stone plinth with stone steps up to the door and had a pavilion-type roof. The author's research on the building turned up a copy of the original architect's sketch dated 1879 by H. J. Garland (a carpenter and builder rather than an architect) and a collection of anecdotes relating to the building's erection and subsequent removal (it was removed in 1963). Contains a photocopy of a black and white photograph of the structure and a photograph of the original Building Control plan (E 184) to be found in Bath Record Offie and Local Studies.
Also contains some biographical material on Anna Sewell (author of Black Beauty) and her family who lived in Bath and the surrounding area in the 1860s.
