Description
This is a small series of files and volumes which deal with a range of matters relating to the civic functions of the mayor during the First World War (1914-1918), such as appeals for funds, organisation of voluntary work, requests for intervention in personal cases, and the arrangement of peace celebrations. Some files deal with specific matters, while others are files of general correspondence.

The files were originally part of the Mayors' Business files series, but became separated, probably during the Second World War, when many files were sent for salvage (waste paper for recycling). The files were indeed marked on an old filing list as 'Salvage', but were in fact retained; they were kept separately from the main series, apart from a small number which were subsequently re-incorporated with new reference numbers. We have now combined both the separate files and the renumbered ones to re-form the original series; we were unable to give it the original series number as recorded in the filing list, as this number was re-used in a later revision of the filing system, so we have decided to keep this small series separate from the main series of Mayors' Business Files.

It has not been possible to discover the original order of the Individual files within the series, so they have therefore been placed in date order.

Note that files relating to the Mayors' civic functions during the Second World War can be found in the main series of Mayors' Business Files (BC/9/6).
