Description
Until 1835, the Mayor was also Coroner ex officio. He or his deputy presided at inquests, with a jury. The volumes of inquests include details of each inquest, with statements of witnesses, names of jurors, and their verdict.

Apart from a small number of lists of inquests for the period 1883-1890, found in Quarter Sessions register QS/2/3/5, no records of inquests are held for the period 1836-1900. As far as we are aware these records have not survived. Fortunately, newspaper reports of inquests at this time can be very detailed. Records from 1900-1988 are catalogued separately with the reference CR; access to these records may be restricted under UK Data Protection Law.
