A collection of letters addressed to Philip George Senior and Philip George Junior, the majority from solictors. Of particular interest are a collection of letters, mostly from the law firm Lowes and Cowburn, relating to the court cases as a result of the rioting after the Bath election in October 1812. Included is a small bundle relating to the case between John Allen, who had protested at Bath Corporation's monopoly of the Parliamentary franchise, and George Kitson, one of the chief constables, who had struck Allen during the riot. Of particular interest is a list of 48 names and locations of the men put forward to make up the Grand Jury in the case between Kitson and Allen. Other letters relate to debt recovery; the purchase of the Kennett Navigation Company; a request to search for two Bath residents who may have aided the escape of the French navy officer, Louis Vanhille, from Dartmoor prison; several letters from Booth and Leggat, solicitors for the Affairs of the Taxes in search of fraudsters and tax evasion; a search for Richard James of either South or North Parade, Bath, who had abandoned his wife and child; and several letters relating to the rental of properties in Bath. Also a letter detailing the sentences of Russ, White and Stallard who were sentenced to hard labour with time in solitary confinement at Ilchester Gaol (see BC/3/2/48/14).
