Description
Mr Lens's opinion was sought by the Trustees of the Bath Turnkpike Trust regarding the practice of stage coaches evading tolls by stopping just short of the gate and continuing on foot to deliver parcels. The case had been brought in front of the magistrates who deemed the practice lawful; the Bath Turnpike Trust argue that by stopping short of the toll, the carriages are not paying to use the road. Although the stage coach proprieter is not mentioned by name in the Case for opinion, the name of Mr Pickwick is given as a title. With the opinion of Lens given.
