1. Mary Gye, Market Place, Bath, Bookseller, Printer and Stationer and widow of William Gye (plaintiff) 2. Thomas Hobbes, Market Place, Bath, Grocer (plaintiff) 3. John Phelps, head hostler at the Christopher Inn, High Street, Bath (defendant)
3 accused by 1 of stealing a large number of volumes of Addison's Anecdotes, printed by William Gye ten years previously. Having not sold, they were stored in the loft of the Christopher Inn. 3 also accused by 2 of stealing sugar from a room behind the Christopher Inn.
Includes draft briefs relating to the two cases together with witness statements, an outline of the case brought by Hobbes, a small plan on the verso of a card and a larger plan of the rooms adjacent to the Christopher Inn on High Street, Bath, relating to the cases brought by Thomas Hobbes and Mary Gye. Phelps was found guilty of the charge of stealing the sugar and was therefore not tried for the theft of the books.
