Description
A small collection of papers listing land and prices, together with a letter from George C. Ashmead, Bristol, Railway Surveyor. Bathampton Manor was owned by George Edward Allen (1766-1850), uncle of Ralph Shuttleworth Allen (1817-1887). Wiltshire Somerset and Weymouth Railway Company applied to Parliament in 1846 for an Act enabling the company to compulsory purchase land between Staverton and Bradford Upon Avon. The Act was passed with the agreement that the line would be extended to Freshford, Limpley Stoke, to a junction with the main railway line at Bathampton. See also BC 3/2/1/1/19 and 27.
