Description: A view looking south down Southgate Street towards the railway bridge and the recently started development of Calton Road on the slopes of Beechen Cliff. The construction of the new shopping mall is underway on the east side of the street- site hoardings erected with a temporary pedestrian walkway extended into the road and scaffolding erected for the first floor construction. The restrictions on space show as a crowded pavement on the right. Principal shops on the right are William Mitchell (Bath) Ltd., general drapers, Saxone, shoe shop on the right and, further down, Midland Bank with a projecting sign. The photograph has punch holes on its top edge. B/W
