Description
A view of the west side of Kingsmead Square with the dominant Rosewell House on its corner. It has five bays over 3 storeys and a hipped roof. There are angled pilasters and pilasters flanking the middle bay. The windows on left and right of the facade are heavy and have keystones with busts, only one of which is clear because of the general blackening by pollution. The centre bay includes a simple doorway with ionic columns supporting a pediment. The first floor window has bearded termini Atlantes to the left and right. The upper floor is the ultimate fantastical baroque expression with a segmental arch over the central window which itself is surrounded by garlands and ornaments. All this is topped by a heavy moulded cornice on brackets. At street level the windows have been replaced by two shops. On the left is J.H. Hopkins, chemist and on the right, C.R. Wetten, fruiterer. To the left is the entry to New Street West and the corner shop is occupied by Walshaw & Son, dairy and milk bar. Reverse: Photographers stamp in blank ink 'Photograph by Desmond Tripp of Bristol, -Studio - 36 Whiteladies Road, Bristol 8,Phone; 86213' pencil note'4233/1.' B&W
