Description
A photograph of the main entrance façade of the Guildhall (architect Thomas Baldwin 1775-78) seen from the corner of Cheap Street. The ground floor is rusticated with vermiculation where it projects in the centre. Above is a 3 bay giant portico of attached Ionic columns on pedestals. The entablature has a fluted frieze with paterae in the centre part which are carried across the frieze. The pediment has the City Arms flanked by festoons in the tympanum. The two wings each have a large window at first floor level set into an arched recess. On the left is a wing addition by Brydon (1891) which steps forward. Above this are 2 stage belvederes in the style of Wren or Vanbrugh. The first stage is square with rusticated arched openings framed by blocked Ionic half columns in pairs. The second stage, octagonal, with round openings crowned by a lead dome and vase. In the foreground is a Saab 9-3. On the reverse a note in pencil: "1978". B&W
