Description
View looking north from the viewpoint on Beechen Cliff across the city. In the foreground is the terrace known as St Mary's buildings cascading down the hill towards the Wells Road. The 2 large buildings in the foreground on the Lower Bristol Road are the Maltings and the Corn Silos. The businesses of J Foster and Sons Shopfitters on The Ambury and Read & Co, motor engineers on Broad Quay are seen on the extreme right. On the left going up to Kingsmead Street is Avon Street. In the centre of the picture is Peter Street, now demolished, which terminates at the junction with Lower Borough Walls and Westgate Buildings. The gables of Abbey Church House are in the centre of the picture and the long terrace extending to the right belongs to St James Parade. Above the rooftops is the broad façade of the City of Bath Technical college, now restored as the Gainsborough hotel. To the right is Bath Abbey and on the extreme right the south façade of the Empire Hotel. The church tower of St Michael's stands at the junction of Broad Street and Walcot Street. Further above, from left to right is Camden Crescent, Berkeley Place on Camden Road and the curvature of Belgrave Crescent droops downhill to the right. On the right, behind the tower of the Abbey, are the backs of terraces on London Road with the tower of St Saviour's church standing sharply against the shape of Little Solsbury Hill. On the reverse a photographer's stam in faded black: "Photograph by T. C. Leaman 7 The Corridor Bath Phone: 3343 When reordering please quote 12345". B&W
