Description
A view looking north, concentrating on the façade of No 16 Grove Street, the former Old Gaol, 1772-3, resembling a Palladian mansion, built by Thomas Atwood. It has five bays, the middle three recessed, a rusticated ground floor and above this windows alternately pedimented and without pediment. The ground floor is raised above a basement in this once flood-prone area and terminating with a stone balustrade. The building then became a police barracks, 1850 -1903. The left hand side of No 15 Grove Street is visible to the right of the photograph: a three-storeyed tenement with characteristic chamfered windows. A tamper machine is parked on the road in the foreground B&W
