Description
A photograph of the east-facing façade of King Edward's School (1752-4, Thomas Jelly) viewed from Saracen Street. The centre is three windows wide and breaks forward slightly leaving wings one window wide. The main cornice is modillioned and each wing has a balustraded parapet leading to a large central parapet. Ionic columns supporting a pediment form the doorcase entrance. The shallow forecourt is enclosed on the street by stone balustrades between strong tall piers topped by urns. On either side of the facade are classically detailed entrances abutting adjacent buildings. Two female pedestrians walk up the hill towards George Street. On the front is a note in blue biro- 'King Edward VI School Broad Street'. On the reverse: a note in black ink-'King Edward School Broad Street before restoration of 1977'. B&W
