Description
A photograph of Nos 13 and 14 Abbey Church Yard on the north side with the west front of the Abbey just visible on the right. The left hand façade known as General Wade's house (ca. 1720, architect not recorded) has above the ground floor (shop premises of Cyril Howe['s]) a glorious architectural showpiece. Three of the 5 giant fluted Ionic pilasters dividing the upper part of the front into 4 bays are visible. The spandrels below the second floor windows have carved garlands. The entablature has a pulvinated frieze and modillioned cornices. Above is an attic storey with panelled pilasters. The right hand façade, also No 14, because it runs through to Cheap Street, has above the shop fronted ground floor (Cyril Howe) an Ionic first floor with a straight pediment and the second floor is Corinthian with a segmental pediment. The attic storey is plain. There is a glimpsed view of the Guildhall beyond No 13. On the bottom edge of the photograph in black ink "14 Abbey Churchyard: Bath. On the reverse is a stamp in black ink: H.E. Stutchbury City Architect and Planning Officer, Abbey Chambers, Bath. B&W
