Description
A photograph of Nos 13 and 14 Abbey Church Yard on the north side with the west front of the Abbey on the right. The left hand façade known as General Wade's house (ca. 1720, architect not recorded) has above the ground floor (shop premises of T J Dyte, bookseller) a glorious architectural showpiece. There are 5 giant fluted Ionic pilasters dividing the upper part of the front into 4 bays. The spandrels below the second floor windows have carved garlands. The entablature has a pulvinated frieze and modillioned cornices. Above is an attic storey with panelled pilasters. Three urns stand on the top coping. The right hand façade, also No 14, because it runs through to Cheap Street, has above the shop fronted ground floor (Cyril Howe) an Ionic first floor with a straight pediment and the second floor is Corinthian with a segmental pediment. The attic storey is plain. "Cyril Howe Studios, Bath" is embossed in the bottom right hand corner. Unfortunately there are 2 punch holes at the top edge. On the reverse are notes in black ink: "13 & 14 Cheap Street, Bath. Elevation facing Abbey Church Yard, Bath. W. A. Williams. Architect & Surveyor. 5, Wood St., Bath" and a faded Cyril Howe stamp in blue: "Cyril Howe Studios 38 Milsom Street Bath Phone 60444 Copyright Neg. No. [in pencil] 681/55/B Re-orders Quote Above" and a pencil note 681/B. B&W
