Description
Bath City Council acquired responsibility for public health matters under the 1851 Bath Act. At first, these responsibilities were carried out by the 1851 Bath Act Committee, but in 1871 they passed to two new committees, the Sanitary Committee (which dealt with sewers, nuisances, slaughter houses, common lodging houses, smoke nuisances, offensive trades, and unwholesome food) and the Surveying Committee (which dealt with pitching, paving, lighting, scavenging, watering streets and roads).

From 1871 to 1906, although the Sanitary Committee and Surveying Committee met separately, the minutes of both are included in the same volume. From 1906, they are in separate volumes. Minutes relating to the work carried out by the Sanitary Committee from 1851 to 1871 can therefore be found in the minutes of the 1851 Bath Act Committee and for the period 1871-1906 in the minutes of the Sanitary and Surveying Committees (references BC/2/1/8/1-22)

The name of the committee changed from Sanitary to Health Committee in November 1920.

The Sanitary/Health Committee appointed sub-committees to carry out various aspects of its work. Before 1906, the minutes of some of these sub-committees can be found in volumes containing minutes of the sub-committees of the 1851 Bath Act Committee/Surveying and Sanitary Committees, but some (even before 1906) are in separate volumes. The sub-committees are arranged in chronological order of the start date of the sub-committee.
