Description
Bath Corporation acquired the baths fed by the naturally-occurring thermal spa waters in 1554, when it acquired them from the Abbey following the Dissolution. The Council has managed and developed the baths since then, building and renovating new baths, and adding the pump room, where the waters could be drunk, in the early eighteenth century. The visitors attracted by the baths and pump room, first as a health resort and more recently as a heritage destination, have provided the Council and many of the inhabitants of the city with a valuable source of income.

The Baths and Pump Room Committee was set up in 1833.

The Baths Committee had various name changes over its time, it is first recorded as the Baths Committee on the 9 July 1833, then as Baths & Pump Rooms Committee on the 3 January 1857, the Hot Mineral Baths and Pump Room Committee on the 23 December 1887, the Baths Management Committee on the 11 September 1922, Bath Spa Committee on the 13 November 1928, before finally being recorded as the Spa Committee from the 19 February 1935 onwards.
