Description
A scheme for erecting tablets commemorating notable residents of Bath was established in 1898 when the Council set aside £250 for the erection of 45 tablets. It was instigated by Thomas Sturge Cotterell, MBE JP, who was a local historian and in 1930 was Mayor of Bath. The plaques were made of bronze and were designed by the architect, Samuel Sebastian Reay (d.1933). Cotterell may have been inspired by the 'Blue Plaque Scheme' which was set in 1866 by the Society of Arts to commemorate various significant inhabitants of London.
