Description
Includes correspondence, newspaper cuttings, brochure entitled 'Bath and Phillip of Australia,' and notes regarding Admiral Arthur Phillip, 1738-1814, first governor of New South Wales and founder of Australia who lived at 19 Bennett Street and died in Bath in 1814. Admiral Phillip's memorial in Bathampton deteriorated but was restored and celebrated on 7 May 1958, during Australian Fortnight (7 May 1958-24 May 1958).
Also includes information about the annual commemorations of Admiral Phillip, subsequent deterioration of the memorial and the erection of a commemorative plaque and a memorial tablet in Bath Abbey.
