Description
Pre First World War official group photograph annotated by Colour Sergent Frederick John Reginald Urch ‘K Company, 1st Volunteer Battalion Prince Albert’s Somerset Light Infantry, 1904’.
Front row: Centre with prize cup, Lieut Bunting, to right of him Sgt FJRU (age 24) next is an older man with medals, probably a Boer War Veteran. 2nd from left possibly Radford. All have rifles and are wearing bandoliers. Location is the Rifle Volunteer Drill Ground behind the old Drill Hall, Lower Bristol Road, Bath [demolished 1969]. The local volunteers often took part in shooting competitions such as this one which was reported in the Bath Chronicle of 13 October 1904: ‘Cyclists win the Thatcher Cup. Annual competition of the local Volunteers was held on Saturday. Won by K (Cyclist) Company with 49 points – Lt. Bunting’ [Frederick John Reginald Urch was a Volunteer Cyclist] The object was to march 5 miles (no refreshments allowed) then endeavour to get the most ‘hits’ in a mock attack.
