Description
A photograph of a train crossing a large metal bridge. The photograph has been annotated by Colour Sergent Frederick John Reginald Urch with ‘Hardinge Bridge on up to Darjeeling. July 19th 1916’.
This steel railway bridge, over one mile long, is at Sara over the River Ganges [now Padma] in East Bengal [now Bangladesh]. It carried the Broad Gauge East Bengal Railway and opened in 1915 so it was only a year old when Colour Sergent Frederick John Reginald Urch crossed it in the train on his way to the hills.
