Description
Photograph showing a large crowd gathered at Queen Victoria’s statue, Cubbon Park, Bangalore, where wreaths have been laid. The crowd are all facing towards the statue so only the backs of their heads can be seen. The panoramic view has been created by cutting and pasting together several photographs.

The photograph was probably taken on Empire Day; first celebrated in Britain on the 24 May 1902 (Birthday of Queen Victoria, Empress of India). Although India did not adopt this day until 1922 it was celebrated in earlier years by the British Military Cantonment. Battalion Orders record Empire Day celebrations at the statue on 24 May 1915.
