Description
While there has been a theatre in Bath since 1805, only two have held Royal licence; Orchard Street theatre, built 1750, Royal licence granted 1768, and the current Theatre Royal from 1805. Bath was the first theatre outside London to be granted Royal licence. For further information see The Theatre Royal at Bath by William Lowndes (Redcliffe Press, 1982). The records themselves consist of accounts and related papers, particularly those of the tontine from 1807, season receipts 1838-1862 and detailed papers of the legal struggle of control of the theatre during the mid-nineteenth century. Minutes of the theatre committee and title deeds to the land are also part of this collection. See also Accession 0483 for Theatre Royal programmes 1943-present.
